Snapper Reels
The most popular boat reel is the egg beater type fixed spool or
spinning reel. An excellent heavy duty reel that I have owned for many
years is the Penn 850Ssm. These are popularised for the ease of use and
their bullet proof reliability.

Overhead reels offer superior pulling power and smoothness and is
ideal for snapper fishing when paired with braided lines. The smaller
line diameter and increased line capacity means that if you hook onto
something bigger than a snapper, you still have sufficient line to land
that shark or yellow tail kingfish.

If you are only going on snapper trips a few times a year, the fixed
spool reels will do, but if you are a keen snapper man, get yourself an
overhead reel that will help you bring back some of those big fish other
anglers lose.
Snapper Lines
I mostly use nylon but the new braided lines are becoming very
popular. These are super strong for their diameter and have virtually no
stretch so you can feel every tug of the fish.
Braided lines are more suitable for use on overhead reels and a
12-15kg breaking strain line is ideal for snapper fishing.
If you prefer traditional nylon, lines, get a 10-12kg breaking strain
of a dark brown or green colour. Avoid clear or light coloured lines as
these can be seen flashing in the sunlight when used in clear water.
